What is PSSR and why it matters

PSSR is UK legislation for pressure systems used at work. It aims to prevent serious injury by ensuring systems (including espresso machine boilers) operate within safe limits, are covered by a Written Scheme of Examination, and are examined by a competent person at the intervals set in that scheme. See the official HSE overview.

Written Scheme of Examination (WSE)

Defines what’s examined, how and how often, and must be in place before first use. Examinations follow the WSE.

Who needs it?

Any employer or business operating a qualifying espresso machine at work. Routine servicing ≠ PSSR; the statutory examination is separate.

How often?

Intervals are set by your WSE based on risk. Many schedule annually; some guidance allows up to ~14 months.

    PSSR — FAQs

Is a routine service the same as a PSSR examination?

No. Servicing/maintenance is separate. PSSR requires a statutory examination in accordance with a WSE by a competent person.

Do new machines need a WSE?

Yes. A suitable WSE must be in place before first use, and the system must be examined in line with that scheme.

    How often is the examination?

The interval is set in your WSE based on risk. Many operators schedule annually; some guidance allows up to ~14 months.

Keep your latest examination report and WSE on file for insurers and inspections.
