Single-use plastic stirrers and straws have been restricted in England since 2020, so the practical question is which compliant material suits your service.

Biodegradable wooden stirrers are the straightforward replacement for hot drinks — no taste transfer, no bending, supplied in boxes of 1,000. For cold drinks, compostable PLA spoon straws handle thick milkshakes where a standard straw collapses, and compostable smoothie straws cover wider-bore drinks.

One thing worth knowing: compostable only delivers its benefit if your waste contractor collects for industrial composting. If they don’t, these still avoid the plastic restriction but end up in general waste — worth a call to your provider before you switch the whole range.
