A Billi tap is an under-counter water system with a single tap at the sink that dispenses filtered boiling water on demand, and depending on the model, chilled or sparkling water too. The working parts sit in the cupboard below: a filter, a heating unit and, on the chilled models, a cooling unit. No kettle, no waiting, no water cooler bottles taking up floor space.

They are a fixture in offices, hotels and busy staff kitchens, and increasingly in cafes that want to serve table water and pour-over without tying up the espresso machine. Here is how they work and which model suits which setting.

What is a Billi tap

Billi makes instant filtered water systems. The visible part is a slim tap, usually in chrome or a matt finish, mounted on the counter or sink surround. Behind the cupboard door sits the unit that filters, heats and in some cases chills the water.

Press or turn the relevant control and you get water at the temperature you asked for, straight away. Boiling water arrives hot enough for tea and instant coffee with no boil-up delay. Chilled water arrives cold without ice, jugs or a bottled cooler.

The point is throughput. A kettle serves two or three people at a time and then needs refilling. A Billi tap serves a queue. That difference matters more than any single feature when you have twenty people wanting tea at 10am.

The short answer

A Billi tap gives you filtered boiling water instantly from a dedicated tap, with the tank, heater and filter hidden under the counter. Some models add chilled water, and one adds sparkling. They replace kettles, water coolers and boilers with a single fitting at the sink. We stock three models as part of our cold drink systems and machines range.

How the filtration, heating and cooling actually works

Mains water enters the under-counter unit and passes through a filter before it goes anywhere near the heater or the chiller. That order matters. Filtering first protects the internals and means every drop that leaves the tap has already been treated.

Filtration removes chlorine and sediment, which is why the tea tastes cleaner than kettle water in most parts of the country. In hard water areas the filter also reduces scale-forming minerals, which is the difference between a unit that runs quietly for years and one that furs up.

Heating

Boiling water is held ready in an insulated tank rather than heated from cold each time you press the tap. That is where the instant delivery comes from. The tank reheats between draws, so a run of cups in quick succession is no problem.

Cooling

On the chilled models, a separate circuit takes filtered water down to drinking temperature and holds it there. Because it is chilled in the unit rather than in a bottle, you are not storing anything, sanitising anything or lifting anything.

Filter changes

The filter is a consumable. How often it needs changing depends on your water hardness and how much you draw off, and it is the one bit of routine maintenance that gets forgotten. Building it into the same schedule as your coffee machine servicing is the sensible approach, and our machine filtration section covers the wider picture on protecting water-fed equipment.

  • Filter first, then heat or chill, so the tank never sees untreated water
  • Boiling water is stored ready, not heated on demand, so there is no lag
  • Chilled water is cooled in the unit, so there are no bottles to store or handle
  • Everything except the tap itself lives out of sight in the cupboard

Sahara vs Quadra: two functions or three

The choice comes down to whether you need cold water on tap or only hot. Both families give you the same instant boiling water and the same filtration.

The Billi Sahara Boiling & Still Filtered Tap at 2,985.00 pounds ex VAT dispenses boiling and filtered still water. If your team drinks tea and coffee all day and cold water is an occasional glass rather than a constant demand, this is the one to fit. It is the lower purchase price and the simpler installation.

The Billi Quadra Boiling & Chilled Filtered Tap at 4,120.80 pounds ex VAT adds properly chilled water. In a hotel, a gym or a large office this usually pays for itself in bottled water and cooler rental that you stop buying.

Adding sparkling water to the mix

The Billi Quadra Boiling, Chilled & Sparkling Filtered Tap at 5,738.00 pounds ex VAT covers all three outputs from one fitting. Boiling for hot drinks, chilled for glasses of water, sparkling for the table.

This is a hospitality specification more than an office one. Restaurants and hotel bars that currently buy in glass bottles of sparkling water are carrying stock, storing crates, chilling them and dealing with the empties. Producing it at the point of service removes all of that, and lets you serve house sparkling water in your own glassware.

It is the highest outlay of the three, so the arithmetic matters. Work out what you spend on bottled sparkling and still water in a year and compare. Venues serving high volumes tend to reach the answer quickly. The rest of our cold systems range is worth a look if sparkling is not a requirement.

Where Billi taps earn their keep

Anywhere with a queue at the kettle. That is the honest test.

  • Offices and staff kitchens. Removes kettle bottlenecks, and removes the kettle safety conversation with it
  • Hotels. Breakfast service, staff areas and back-of-house prep all draw hot and cold water constantly
  • Cafes. Frees the espresso machine hot water tap for what it is actually needed for, and gives you clean filtered water for filter brewing and table service
  • Restaurants. Table water on demand, plus boiling water for the kitchen
  • Gyms and leisure sites. Chilled water without bottle deliveries or cooler rental

In a coffee shop, a Billi tap alongside a commercial coffee machine is a sensible split of duties. Your barista is not standing there filling a teapot from the group head steam tap while three coffees wait.

Deciding if one belongs in your business

Three questions settle it. How many people need hot water in the same ten minutes? Do you currently pay for bottled or cooler water? And is there usable cupboard space next to the sink with access to mains water and a socket?

If the answer to the first two is “a lot” and “yes”, a Billi tap is straightforward to justify. If you only occasionally need a hot drink for two people, a kettle is still the right tool and there is no point pretending otherwise.

Installation needs a plumber and an electrician, or one competent person who covers both. It is not a DIY fit, and the under-counter unit needs enough clearance for filter changes. Worth measuring the cupboard before you order.
