Brew Millicano like any instant coffee: one heaped teaspoon, roughly 2g, per 200ml of hot (not boiling) water, stirred for several seconds so the micro-ground beans disperse fully. In an office or cafe, a Matrix Premier 3 machine loaded with the correct Millicano pod delivers that same ratio automatically, cup after cup.

What makes Millicano different from regular instant

Standard instant coffee is brewed, dried and granulated. Millicano takes that base and blends micro-ground roasted beans back into it, so part of what lands in your cup is actual coffee solids rather than soluble granules alone.

Two things follow. The cup has more body and a darker, roastier flavour, and it needs a few more seconds of stirring than plain granules. It is still an instant product, though. Millicano dissolves, it does not extract.

The right ratio and water temperature

Get these three numbers right and the rest looks after itself.

  • Dose: one heaped teaspoon, around 2g, per cup. Two teaspoons in a 200ml mug makes it harsh, not stronger.
  • Water: 200ml at roughly 90 to 95°C. Let a freshly boiled kettle stand for 30 seconds before pouring.
  • Stir: five to ten seconds, properly, until no dark specks cling to the side of the mug.

Water at 100°C scorches the micro-ground element and pushes the cup towards bitterness. That short pause after the kettle clicks off is the single easiest improvement most people can make.

If you take milk, add it once the coffee has dissolved. Pouring hot water onto coffee sitting in cold milk drops the temperature too far and leaves residue in the bottom of the mug.

Brewing at your desk or behind the counter

For homes, small offices and cafes serving the occasional instant, working from a jar is perfectly sensible. A 300g jar of Kenco Millicano Americano costs £17.95 ex VAT and gives you around 150 cups at the recommended dose.

Warm the mug with a splash of hot water and tip it out, since cold ceramic pulls several degrees off a 200ml serve. Add the coffee, pour a little hot water first and stir to a smooth paste, then top up and stir again. That paste step is the one most people skip, and it eliminates clumping entirely.

Keep the lid on between uses and store the jar somewhere dry, away from dishwasher steam. Instant coffee pulls moisture out of the air, clumps and goes flat long before the best-before date if the jar is left open.

Serving Millicano from an instant machine

Once you are making more than about twenty cups a day, the teaspoon becomes the bottleneck. A Matrix Premier 3 holds the coffee in a sealed pod, doses it against hot water at a set temperature and dispenses a consistent cup in seconds. Nobody measures teaspoons accurately at 8am in a busy office kitchen, and the machine has no opinion about how strong it likes its coffee.

Both run the same Millicano pods and produce the same cup. For multi-floor sites, the refurbished price is often the difference between one machine and two.

Choosing the right pod format

Millicano pods come in more than one format, and the correct one depends on which Premier 3 variant you run and how many cups it serves between refills. The Millicano table top pod is the format for table top installations. The Millicano compact pod suits compact machine configurations where space or throughput is more limited, and the Kenco Millicano micro pod covers lower-volume serving points.

Not certain which yours takes? Check the label on the pod currently fitted, or call us with the model details before ordering. Two minutes on the phone beats a pod that does not seat correctly.

Keeping the machine running cleanly

An instant machine heats water constantly, which means limescale. Across the hard water areas of the South East, scale builds faster than most sites expect and shows up first as slow dispense and lukewarm cups. Descale on a schedule rather than when someone complains. Our explainer on what descaler does and how often to use it sets out sensible intervals by water hardness.

Day to day, wipe the dispense nozzle and drip tray at close. Residue around the outlet taints the next morning’s first cup more than any brewing variable. Keep a spare pod on the shelf so a refill never becomes a service interruption. Orders over £69 ex VAT ship free next working day to mainland UK, and anything placed before 4:30pm Monday to Friday goes out the same day with DPD.

Common mistakes

Boiling water straight from the kettle. The most common error by a distance. Thirty seconds of patience fixes it.

Overdosing. Two heaped teaspoons doubles the bitterness, not the strength. If the cup tastes weak, use less water rather than more coffee.

Treating it like ground coffee. Millicano will not work in a cafetiere, a filter brewer or an espresso portafilter. It is designed to dissolve, and filter equipment has nothing to extract from it.

Fix the water temperature, measure the dose honestly and keep the jar or machine clean, and the cup is genuinely good. Browse the full coffee machine range if you are weighing up a move from jars to automated serving.

Frequently asked questions

Is Millicano the same as instant coffee?

Not quite. It is instant coffee blended with micro-ground roasted beans, which gives more body and flavour than standard granules. It dissolves the same way, but the cup is fuller and more textured.

Can you use Millicano in a cafetiere or filter machine?

No. Millicano dissolves in hot water or dispenses through a compatible instant machine. It is not ground for brewing equipment such as a cafetiere, filter brewer or espresso portafilter.

Does Millicano work in a Nespresso-style capsule machine?

No. Millicano pod formats are made for Matrix Premier 3 instant machines, not for Nespresso, Dolce Gusto or K-fee systems. Check which system you own before ordering.

How many cups does a 300g jar make?

At roughly 2g per cup, around 150, though that varies with cup size and taste. For higher volumes, a Premier 3 with bulk pods is more practical than jars.
