Birmingham and the West Midlands run on some of the softest water in England, which changes both how machines wear and how the coffee tastes. Our engineers are CoffeeSafe accredited, employed rather than subcontracted, and carry out PSSR boiler inspections.

Water in Birmingham is soft — and it decides what goes wrong

Birmingham is supplied by Severn Trent, drawing from the Elan Valley in mid-Wales. Hardness across the area runs usually 40–70 ppm, soft. That one number drives almost everything about how a commercial machine ages here, which is why we test it on site rather than assume it.

Birmingham’s water is famously soft. That means very little scale, but soft water is not a free pass: it is more aggressive to boiler metals and group gaskets than hard water, and it extracts differently in the cup.

If you have moved a machine to Birmingham from the south and the coffee has not tasted right since, it is very unlikely to be the machine. Re-dialling the grind for softer water usually fixes it, and that is a five-minute job on a service visit.

On soft water in Birmingham a service visit is mostly the opposite of a descale: we are looking for pinholing in pipework, gasket degradation and pitting inside the boiler. We specify Brita Purity filtration against your actual throughput rather than fitting the same cartridge everywhere.

The faults we actually see in Birmingham

The Birmingham calls we get most are seal and gasket failures, and machines that simply taste wrong after being moved from a hard-water area. Soft water pulls more from the grounds, so a recipe dialled in elsewhere will over-extract here and taste harsh or hollow.

The Birmingham trade we work with

The West Midlands runs a broad mix: city-centre independents, a substantial conference and hospitality trade around the NEC and ICC, and large office and manufacturing sites where the machine is staff welfare rather than a revenue line.

Where we cover in Birmingham

Birmingham city centre, Solihull, Wolverhampton, Walsall, Dudley, West Bromwich, Sutton Coldfield, Coventry, Redditch and Bromsgrove, and the surrounding area.

Common questions about servicing in Birmingham

How often should a machine be serviced in Birmingham?
Annually as a minimum, and every six months on anything pulling serious volume. Water moves that: soft water in Birmingham means corrosion and seal wear drive the interval rather than scale.

Do I need a water filter in Birmingham?
Yes, but a different one. Birmingham water is soft, so you do not need aggressive scale reduction — you need a cartridge that stabilises pH and protects boiler metals from corrosion.

Do you only service machines you supplied?
No — we work on most commercial makes across Birmingham regardless of where they came from.
